General Questions
Start here for the basics, what we do, who we help, and how working with a professional organizing and move management team actually works.
How long has The Moving Genie been operating?
We’ve been providing move management and organizing services across the GTA for over 12 years, with 500+ families helped across Toronto, Oakville, Vaughan, North York, and Durham Region.
What is move management, and how is it different from hiring movers?
Movers transport your belongings from one address to another. Move management is everything around that: the planning, the packing, the decision-making, the vendor coordination, and the unpacking and set-up at the other end. The Moving Genie handles the entire process, so you stay in control without managing every detail yourself.
Why does it matter that you’re an all-women team?
We work inside people’s homes during some of the most personal transitions of their lives. Many clients, particularly women, seniors, and families managing estates, find it more comfortable to have an all-women team present. It’s about creating a safe, respectful environment where the focus is on your transition, not on managing the team.
How much does move management cost in Toronto?
Every project is scoped individually. Cost depends on the size of the home, the services needed, and the timeline. We provide a clear written estimate after your consultation, so you know exactly what to expect before committing to anything.
Do you only help with moves?
No, and this is an important distinction. We support any home transition: downsizing, estate clearing, pre-sale decluttering, pre-renovation clearing, post-renovation resetting, or getting a home that’s never been properly organized under control. If your home is in a state of change and the process feels unmanageable, that’s where we work.
Do I need all four services, or can I book just one?
You can book any service on its own. Many clients start with packing or decluttering and add move management as the move gets closer. We’ll scope exactly what you need during your consultation, with no pressure to take more than fits your situation.
Who do you typically work with?
People navigating a transition of some kind. Busy families managing a move while maintaining their regular lives. People downsizing from a long-time family home into something smaller. Adult children coordinating an estate on behalf of a parent. Seniors looking for a calm, structured way through a major life change. If your home is in a state of change and the process feels unmanageable, you’ve found the right team.
What to Expect
What the first consultation looks like, how to prepare, and what happens once the work begins. A clear picture before we start.
How far in advance should I reach out?
For a full move, 4 to 6 weeks ahead gives us the best runway. For downsizing or estate clearing, earlier is better. These involve more decisions and benefit from a less pressured pace. If your timeline is tight, reach out anyway. We’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.
What does a consultation look like?
A conversation about your space, your timeline, and what’s feeling overwhelming. From there we build a clear scope, so you know exactly what the process looks like before committing to anything.
How do I prepare for my initial consultation?
You don’t need to do anything, and it’s genuinely better if you don’t. Your consultant needs to see the home as it actually is, not as you’d like it to be. Don’t clean up, don’t sort, don’t rearrange. Whatever state the home is in right now, that’s what we need to see. And no matter how you think it looks, we’ve almost certainly worked in more difficult spaces.
Do I need to be there as you work?
Not necessarily. You’ll need to be around for any decisions that need to be made, like new furniture placement or whether to get rid of certain items, but when it comes to the actual hands-on work, you can be wherever you want.
Can you help with a home where clutter has built up over many years?
Yes, and we do this regularly. Cluttered, disorganized, or deeply accumulated homes are some of the most common situations we’re called into. If the situation involves clinical hoarding, where the emotional relationship to belongings is tied to a psychological need, that’s typically a situation that works best alongside professional therapy. We’re happy to talk through what you’re dealing with and give you an honest assessment of what kind of help fits best.
But I don’t wanna throw my stuff away!
And you don’t have to!
Of course, if your house is overly cluttered, your professional organizer may suggest you do what you can to declutter. It’s sometimes difficult to let go of things we’ve had for a long time, but if they’re beginning to get in the way of your ability to enjoy your life, it might be time to let them go.
But the decision is entirely up to you.
But I’m kind of embarrassed by the state of my home
That’s understandable. Sometimes, after neglecting a part of our lives, we wish things were different. And the process of taking action to make it different can sometimes be uncomfortable. But doesn’t that feeling of embarrassment give you an idea that something is wrong? And if so, wouldn’t you rather a professional help you fix your problem?
At first, you might feel a little like an unhealthy person who takes their first few steps on a treadmill at the gym. But it gets easier.
If you’re not happy with the state of your home, it doesn’t have to be that way. Contact The Moving Genie to book an appointment, and let’s talk about where you are and where you’d like to be.
